From a motivational standpoint I am not sure you can turn it into
a black-n-white issue. The university has a program called OU North America which includes the DC campus. I am not sure what OU envisions as its future plans for itself, but it may include some sort of combination of the following:
1. Increase the academic (Norman campus) and athletic exposure in the East Coast.
2. Increase the number of degrees offered at the current OU North America campuses.
3. Expand the number of campuses in the OU North America program.
4. Build (or increase) the number of close working relationships the school has with East Coast colleges/universities.
If OU sees the East Coast as an important region for achieving its future goals and it believes athletics is a good way to increase its academic exposure, then it could desire to become a member of an East Coast athletic conference. FWIW there are still some schools out there that base their athletic conference affiliation on their academic goals and OU may be one of those schools. An argument probably could be made that VT is one of those schools too.
